10 Things You Didn’t Know About Flora Miranda

Hello there,

Flora Miranda.  Ever heard of her?  No?  Well, this post is about to change that.  The talented designer contacted me a couple of months ago to introduce me her concept.  And to be completely honest with you, it was a pleasant discovery for me too.  So, who’s she?  Let’s get to know each other 🙂

 1.  Flora Miranda was born in Austria.

2.  When I asked her when she got her first taste for fashion, she said: “As a young teenager I participated in the Viennese fashion contest “Kids in Fashion” every year, with some drawings, and each year my drawings made it and the designs were realised by fashion students and were shown on a catwalk. However, that was just a little thing on the side because I was mainly occupied with painting. When I was 16 years old, I had the opportunity to do an internship at a Swiss sports company, where I was more fascinated by the team building and the way the company was built than by the technical drawings the fashion designers were spending their time on. When a year later I was given a book about Belgian fashion design I made my final decision. I remember thinking that what I wanted to do in painting I could bring to the body in 3D. In this book I saw a very artistic approach, an alternative view on beauty and gender. Seeing fashion as an art form and recognising that fashion is more than a technical drawing but rather coordinates various disciplines, I was very drawn to take this path.”

3.  Her passions include art, music and the human body.

4.  She graduated from Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp).

6.  When was Flora Miranda founded?  “Flora Miranda was founded in 2015, about one year after I did my master at the Fashion Academy in Antwerp (I graduated in 2014). In 2017 I launched the second line “IT Pieces”, which can currently be bought through our web store itpieces.floramiranda.com, and will soon be featured in stores in Europe“.

7.  Using machine learning, she turns your data into luxury fashion!!!!!!!  OK so, to me, this part is probably the most intriguing thing ever.  I don’t know if you know this, but I’m working in IT and my research focuses (loosely) on AI, machine learning and data.  So when my two worlds collide, my head explodes!!!!  How does Flora uses this field to create incredible pieces?  “We merge artificial intelligence, big data, generative design, and automated, mass customized, sustainable and localised garment production.” I think it’s fascinating.  If you want to know more, you should check out her website (do it, do it!  No but seriously, do it.).

8.  Her work has been exhibited many times.  Specifically, her warp outfit was exhibited at the Modebelofte 2014 during Dutch Design Week, at the “Digital Disturbances” at Fashionspace Gallery in London, at the “Displaying Fashion, Displaying Art” in Salzburg in 2016, and at the Museum for Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg.  The museum now owns this and other outfits.

9.  She won several awards, including the Mittelmoda Fashion Award for the Use of Technology and the Outstanding Artist Award for Experimental Fashion Design in Vienna.

10.  What’s new?  “In January 2018 I presented in Paris during haute couture week for the first time, with the artistic collection Pneuma“.  What is the collection about? “The garment is what lies between the body and the world.  The invisible, the air around the body is the space of possibilities for the garment – up to the nearest tangible element.  […].  With her pneuma collection, Flora Miranda makes this invisible matter, the ambiant space, wearable on the human body.
